How To: Get Out of a Rut

It actually isn't as hard as you think!

I think I find myself in a rut more often than I'd care to admit! But it's only human. After all, we're constantly growing and evolving right?

We get into ruts because we aren't turning inward, and are out of sync with our mental and physical beings. So, we have to sit with ourselves, and take time to understand what may be missing in our lives that's making us feel so low.

There are a few things that help me pull myself out of ruts. Here are my tips:

  1. Sit down with yourself. Think about the last time you felt like you were in a good place--financially, mentally, physically. If it was just a few days ago, great. If you can't remember, that's ok too. That just means you're going to have to spend more time learning what will be essential to your wellbeing.

2. Take things week by week. Stop future tripping, as much as you can. That will only make it harder to pull yourself out of a negative headspace. Focus on what is in front of you right now. Do you have emails you need to answer? An appointment you need to make? Work on the things that can be completed in an afternoon. Then, you can move onto bigger tasks and goals.

3. Tune into your body. Have you been getting regular exercise? Eating enough fruits and veggies? If you realize you're feeling lethargic and tired, maybe begin adjusting a few things. Plan to make a meal with lots of tasty veggies, go on a walk, or take time to yourself if you're feeling drained. It's kind of crazy how we can be so out of touch with our bodies, so simply sitting with yourself can help you pinpoint what areas of your life need attention!

4. And finally, plan something! It's always fun to have plans. Whether that be meeting a friend for coffee, going on a trip, or planning to take a drive somewhere, it keeps life light and interesting. Maybe we haven't been spending any time with friends, or the last time you took a vacation was 3 years ago. Whatever the case, always have something planned every week. It can be a small plan, or a large one, it really doesn't matter--as long as you have something to look forward to!

I hope these can help in some way! When in doubt, turn into YOURSELF!
