How To: Balance Work & Life

Updated: Sep 1

Let’s get one thing straight: taking time off isn’t just a luxury, it’s a necessity. We all know that stepping away from work is essential for our mental health, but how often do we actually do it?

The truth is, humans weren’t built to work 40+ hours a week without pause. Sure, there are exceptions, like when you're launching a business or chasing a dream.

In those seasons, it might feel like you're running on caffeine and ambition. But even then, working non-stop isn’t sustainable. Eventually, the burnout catches up.

Let me say this loud and clear: Taking time off doesn’t make you lazy. It makes you human.

If It Feels Hard, You're Not Alone

Making time for yourself sounds simple, but it’s not always easy ~ especially when hustle culture has us thinking rest is something to “earn.” So, ask yourself:

  • When was the last time you went on a long walk just for you?

  • When did you last take a vacation without bringing your laptop?

  • Have you ever taken a break from social media, even for a day?

If you're struggling to remember, that’s your sign: it’s time to close the laptop and step away — even if it’s just for 30 minutes.

Rest Doesn’t Have to Be a Vacation

You don’t need a plane ticket or a week off to reset. Rest can be simple and still deeply restorative. Here are a few small but powerful ways to take time for yourself:

  • Spend the first hour of your day off your phone

  • Take a 30-minute walk while listening to music or your favorite podcast

  • Journal, draw, dance, or engage in a creative hobby ~ just for fun

  • Move your body in a way that feels good ~ no pressure

  • Cook a meal you love, and actually sit down to enjoy it

Want to Stay Sharp at Work? Step Back

Ironically, the key to doing your best work is not working all the time. Focus and creativity come from a well-rested mind. When you nurture your passions, take care of your body, and make time for joy. You bring more energy and clarity to your work.

Balance isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about knowing when to push and when to pause.

If You Struggle to Step Away, Try This:

  • Start your day with intention: Wake up early, put on an outfit that makes you feel good, eat a solid breakfast, and begin work with a fresh mindset.

  • Set a clear stopping point: Choose a time to shut down for the day. Set an alarm if you need to. When it goes off, actually close your laptop. Log out of email. Stop checking Slack. Instagram can wait.

  • Plan something to look forward to: Whether it’s a solo trip, a weekend with friends, or just a quiet evening with a book — give yourself something non-work-related to be excited about.

Remember This:

Your best work doesn’t come from grinding endlessly. It comes when you’re rested, inspired, and centered. You deserve that. Prioritizing yourself isn’t selfish; it’s the foundation for everything you want to create.

Take the break. You’ll come back better for it.
